Is Caesarean Birth Eclipsing Natural Birth?

Recent studies have shown that caesarean births are growing in popularity. But, not that more mothers are opting for this procedure. However, at the frequency at which it is now performed it will eventually affect our evolution.

Several scientists have stated that more mothers have to undergo surgery to have their babies. Researchers have also reported that this is due inpart to a smaller pelvis in more women. This they argued was different in the 1960s because 30 in every 1,000 babies were unable to pass through the birth canal. But, today that number has risen to 36 in every 1,000 babies.

This they argued was different in the 1960s because only 30 in every 1,000 babies were unable to pass through the birth canal. But, today that number has risen to 36 in every 1,000 babies.

Researchers reported that this is a result of the genes passed on from older mothers. This practice they cautioned cannot continue because birth by C-section can be fatal to the mother and baby.

Austrian scientists who studied this trend said that it will likely continue, although not extensively where non-surgical birth would end.

Dr. Sam Waltham from the Biology Evolution lab at the University of Vienna argued that we first have to understand human evolution in order to find a solution. Dr. Waltham stated that this is called feto-pelvic disproportion when the maternal birth canal is much smaller than the baby.

Many clinical researchers are asking why the human pelvis has not evolved with time. Women today, they said would not have survived childbirth many centuries ago.

The World Health Organization (WHO), along with other medical institution is conducting several experiments to investigate why more women cannot give birth naturally. They have concluded that opposing evolution forces are the cause of the problem.

The result also highlights that today’s newborns are healthier and larger at birth thus this could be the reason why more women today are unable to give birth naturally.
