When Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie announced they were splitting, it shocked the world of entertainment as they had been thought to have been one of the most secure couple’s in showbiz.
Immediately, accusations started flying, with Ms Jolie saying she did not agree with the way Mr Pitt was bringing up their children.
Now, however, Mr Pitt is fighting back, and is asking to have joint custody of the couple’s six children.
According to a divorce filing, the Fight Club actor has now responded to a petition from Ms Jolie earlier this year to draw a close to their two-year marriage.
The Lara Croft actress wants sole physical custody of all six children, who range in age from eight to 15.
Custody is set to be the most bitterly fought issue of their divorce.
Authorities are reported to still be looking into what happened during a private flight in September when Mr Pitt has been accused of physically assaulting his eldest son.
So far, the power couple have managed to agree to a temporary custody arrangement which means that Mr Pitt can continue to visit his children, while a child welfare agency probe continues in Los Angeles.
The outcome of that investigation is likely to have a large impact on a judge’s decision about custody arrangements.
As a general rule, however, courts in California prefer to award joint custody.
If the two actors, who met and fell in love on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith, manage to come to private agreement, it may be that they do not have to go through a public custody battle in the courts.
No further details have emerged about the logistics of the split. When the divorce proposal was filed, it cited irreconcilable differences.
So far, there has been no mention of whether there is any prenuptial agreement in place, which would govern how the couple divides assets.
The two split on September 15, which was one day after the alleged incident which took place on the private plane, involving Mr Pitt and his 15-year-old-son Maddox.
Mr Pitt and Ms Jolie had been together for 12 years after he split from his first wife Jennifer Aniston. The two became close while filming Mr and Mrs Smith in 2005.
The pair have their own birth children, as well as youngsters they have adopted from around the world.
