Lib Dems to Vote Against Article 50

Tim Farron, leader of the Liberal Democrat Party has said his party would vote against triggering Article 50.

Speaking on the Daily Politics show he championed the single market and freedom of movement.  He said, “I do believe being a member of the single market is worth fighting for. I personally believe freedom of movement is a good thing, that British people benefit from freedom of movement.”

Tim Farron also was critical of Theresa May’s approach of waving the single market access before formal negotiations begin.

Nobody Voted for Hard Brexit

He said, “If you are Theresa May and your job is to go fight for the best deal for Britain don’t just take it from Brussels that you can’t be in the single market without those other things as well.

“This is what depresses me, Theresa May is beginning this process waiving the white flag over single market membership.”

He went further by saying that Theresa May had adopted former UKIP leader Nigel Farage’s vision for Britain.  He said, “[Hard Brexit] is not something that was on the ballot last June and for Theresa May to adopt which is basically the Nigel Farage’s vision of Britain’s relationship with Europe and the rest of the world is something that was not voted for last June.

“I think it is right for us to stand up and say that a Hard Brexit is not the democratic choice of the British people.”

Farron’s Dilemmas

Mr Farron is arguably standing on thin ice.  Due to Sarah Olney winning the Richmond Park by-election in December, he has tried to argue that the Lib Dems have a mandate to ignore the democratic vote and keep Britain in the EU.

He also faces other dilemmas of rebuilding his party due to the disastrous coalition government it formed with the Conservative Party where it failed to keep any election promises.  It was almost wiped out in the subsequent 2015 election.
