The Aleppo Bombardment Continues

It’s been claimed by Syrian armed forces rebels in Eastern Aleppo are hoarding warehouses full of food. The ongoing fierce bombardment of Eastern Aleppo, has also resulted in frequent air strikes on hospitals in the past week. The action has left residents woefully short of food, medicines and fuel.

Worryingly, The UN has not been able to gain entry into the rebel-held sector since early July and, last weekend were forced to reveal aid supplies had run out in the area. Even worse, all eight hospitals are either out of action or barely functioning. It’s getting harder by the day for medical professionals to cope.

The Syrian army released a fresh statement saying: “The general command of the armed forces calls upon militants in the neighbourhoods of East Aleppo to open ration warehouses and distribute food to those that need it.”

But Jens Laerke from the UN said at the moment it was unclear whose warehouses the army was referring to. He added: “There are no UN warehouses of food that can just be opened up. There are no food stocks on the U.N. side left in the warehouses. The last UN rations were distributed on 13 November.

Politburo member of the Fastaqim rebel group in Aleppo, Zakaria Malahifji told the media: “There are no such warehouses. “People are searching for bread. The army is saying these things to appear like they care for people,”

Last week saw a civilian protest outside a building believed to belong to the city council for opposition-held Aleppo, thinking there was food inside. No-one from the council was available for comment.

With the onset of winter the whole Syrian situation is becoming an even greater matter of concern for the watching world. As air strikes resume Russia says it hasn’t bombarded Aleppo for 28 days.
